Outline of Final Research Achievements |
A large area of U.S. military facility located in south-central urban area of Okinawa is scheduled to be returned to Japan. However, there are many agendas for smooth transition: 1)Financial instability of land owners, 2)Absence of the blueprint for the land usage, 3)Defining the significance of the site within Okinawa Prefecture in a macro-perspective, 4)The basic structure of financial support from the Japanese government, 5)The role of local municipality, 6)Difficulties in reaching a consensus with the land owners. The study examines the redevelopment of two former military base sites. One is the Awase Golf Course site in Kitanakagusuku Village where redevelopment was done in fiscal year 2014. The other is the redevelopment of Camp Kinser in Urasoe-city, which partially started in fiscal year of 2017.An effort to construct a sustainable model for community development was observed in Urasoe-city, along with employing conventional redevelopment procedures.
