Direct measurement of subaqueous melting at the front of calving glaciers

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

プロジェクト最終年度にあたるH28年度は、(1)パタゴニアにおける野外観測、および(2)人工衛星データと野外観測データを用いた解析を実施した。
(1) H30年3月5～12日に、チリ・グレイ氷河とその前縁湖において野外観測を実施した。小型船をチャーターして、サイドスキャンソナーによる氷河末端部の水中構造の測定、CTDによる水温・濁度測定、分析用の採水を実施を行った。サイドスキャンソナーによる測定では、前年に明らかになった氷河末端の氷が水中に突き出た構造が再度確認された。また、現地で活動するガイドから、H28年10月に起きたカービングイベントに関する情報を収集した。カービング時に撮影された氷河末端の写真は、サイドスキャンソナーのデータと一致するものであり、水中に突き出た氷に作用する浮力が大規模なカービングを誘起したことを示唆する。この観測は海外共同研究者（チリ・Austral大学、Marius Schaefer）との共同で実施した。
(2) これまでにアルゼンチン・ペリートモレノ氷河で測定した湖水特性データと人工衛星データを合わせて解析し、氷河末端の水中融解を推定することに成功した。この解析結果は、水中融解速度が湖水温度の影響を受けて季節的に変動することを示している。また人工衛星データによって明らかになった氷河末端位置の季節変動が、水中融解を含む末端消耗によって駆動されることが明らかになった。
以上の結果をまとめて、国内外の学会で発表するとともに、国際誌に英文論文を公表した。またチリ国内の氷河研究機関（Centro de Estudios CientificosおよびGeoestudios Ltda）を訪れて、研究成果に関する講演を行った。
