Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
To rescue the “Fake Math Phobia” students before they develop the genuine math phobias, we conducted an experiment with 204 7th grade Japanese junior high school students. The exprimental procedure consisted of the following three phases. 1) Detection of “Fake Math Phobias” 2) Rescue Treatment for a half of the “Fake Math Phobias, ”and 3) Assessment of their math achievement in school. By utilizing the explict and implict measures, we detected 38 Fake Math Phobia students (25 boys & 13 girls) who answered “Unfavorable”in the self-rating (the explicit measure) but performed“Positively" the FUMIE Test (the implicit measure). We randomly divided the Fake Math Phobia students into the Target and Control groups, with having their math achievement scores matched pair-wise: Target FMPs: 18 (12 boys & 6 girls) and Control FMPs: 18 (12 boys & 6 girls). Then, we informed only the Target FMP students of their implicit positive attitudes toward math and encouraged them by telling that their math phobia was fake. No such information was provided to the Control FMP students. After the rescue treatment, we repeatedly assessed the math achievement of the Target and Control FMP students for one year. We obtained the results that showed statistically more Target FMPs improved their math achievements after nine months (p = .0463) and after one year (p = .0026) of the rescue treatment while no more than ten Control FMPs did, that was within the chance level.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
We have completed an experimental study in a junior highschool with 204 participants already. Also, we have obtained the expected results from the experiment.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We will conduct another experiment with a set of new participants. We also plan to collect the follow-up data from the paricipants in the 2014 experiment.
