Outline of Annual Research Achievements

We defined “fake math-dislikes” as those who claimed they disliked mathematics explicitly while accepted it implicitly. We administered questionnaires and implicit association tests to 204 Japanese junior high school students and found 38 fake math-dislikes. Then, we randomly assigned them into Experimental and Control groups and informed only the Experimental students of their positive implicit attitude toward mathematics. One year later, we found 15 of the 16 Experimental students improved their math achievement scores while only nine of the 17 Control students did. The simple practice of informing of their implicit attitude worked to prevent them from becoming real math-dislikes.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

We have already conducted the proposed experiments at a junior high school in Nagano. We have obtained the expected results from these experiments. We have presented a part of the findings at several conferences in Japan and are planning to present a paper at the International meeting of psychologists of mathematics education held at Szeged, Hungary, in August. We have also submitted a manuscript to an international journal for publication.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The year 2016 is the last year of the proposed project. We will continue presenting the research findings at various meetings and conferences. We also submit papers to academic journals.

Causes of Carryover

We decided to present the research findings at the PME40 to be held in 2016. Therefore, we saved about 200,000 yen for the travel expenses in 2016.

Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget

We will use the residual fund for the travel expenses needed for presenting the research results of the present project at the PME40 in Szeged, Hungary, August 2016.
