Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In the period 1913-14, T. S. Eliot (1888-1965), as a graduate student, attended the Harvard lecture “Schools of Religious and Philosophical Thought in Japan”by Masaharu Anesaki (1873-1949), a religious scholar at Tokyo Imperial University, and wrote about the lecture in his“Notes on Eastern Philosophy,”which has been held at Houghton Library at the university. This project deciphered many contents from the“Notes on Eastern Philosophy,”and examined what significance the lecture was for Anesaki's thoughts on Buddhism and Eliot's life, paying attention to the time from their childhood until 1914.
