Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The main purpose of this research is to discover what leadership skills organizations in Japan and Japanese people view as important. In exploring characteristics of leadership, in particular diversity management, focusing in particular on uncertainty management and how well young people cope in unfamiliar situations and the implications related to diversity.
From the spring of 2015 to spring of 2016, we conducted a survey with over 100 Japanese university students regarding their values related to diversity and uncertainty in work situations and social situations. In addition, we carried out interviews with voluntary participants regarding their actions and emotions when encountering uncertain and unfamiliar situations.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
We have been smoothly progressing with our surveys. However, it has taken us longer to conduct interviews with students. This is partly due to the lead researcher's change in workplace. It is also in part because it was decided to introduce a new element to the study. Requests to study participants to keep in-depth journals of their reactions to unfamiliar situations has made it more advantageous to wait to conduct interviews after participants have completed enough journal entries.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Plans are to complete the survey data collection. However, it has been decided to expand it to a sample of students outside Japan for comparison. Interviews will be continued and completed. After all data from surveys and interviews are collected, it will be analyzed and a report will be written. Finally, results of the study will be published in journals and presented at conferences.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Research funds will be necessary to complete the research project as well as to present results at conferences and in written papers.
|
Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
Grant money will be used to collecting remaining data, transcription services, travel expenses, etc. Usage of funds will be approximately as follows: \450,000 for data collection and transcription, 450,000 for travel expenses, and 100,000 for other miscellaneous expenses such as data backup, meetings, and printing costs.
