Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In FY2015, the assessment of 2 major routes to process 3 alternative deep ocean ores was undertaken, as well as a survey of stakeholders. The embodied energy and carbon footprint of processing alternative deep ocean ores (seafloor massive sulphides and manganese nodules) through to final metal was calculated. These results were reported at the ISOPE conference in Hawaii, the Deep Sea Mining Summit in Singapore, and the Future Mining Conference in Sydney. Further work has been undertaken on the materials intensity of key minerals in energy technologies, reported at the World Resources Forum Asia-Pacific conference, and are expected to be published shortly. The project was finalised with a survey of more than 500 stakeholders throughout Japan, to understand the preferences and priorities for resource provision from deep ocean and other resources in Japan. The focus was on the Okinawa Trough massive sulphide deposits.
