Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In FY2017 I made a very good progress in research on ultra-bright x-ray harmonic comb by relativistic plasma singularity. I achieved the Project goals: Using innovative approach, I demonstrated control of x-ray harmonic comb with the peak spectral brightness up to 10^27 photons/mm^2 mrad^2 s 0.1%BW, which is between synchrotrons and XFELs.
In the new regime discovered by us the harmonics are coherently generated by the Burst Intensification by Singularity Emitting Radiation (BISER) effect, where extremely sharp electron spikes (density singularities), emitting bright coherent x-rays, are produced by multi-TW femtosecond lasers focused to gas jets at irradiances >10^18 W/cm^2. Using a shock wave generated in a supersonic gas jet by a blade, I tailored the gas density profile, creating density up-jump. This resulted in controllable, low-jitter x-ray source and higher x-ray yield. My results represent an important step towards a next-generation bright compact coherent x-ray source, and demonstrate a new technique of relativistic self-focusing control and its diagnostics. I published these results in 6 papers, including 3 first-author ones: BISER discovery [Pirozhkov, Esirkepov, et al, Scientific Reports (2017)]; BISER harmonics dependence on laser parameters [Pirozhkov et al, QuBS (2018)], and Approaching diffraction-limited, bandwidth-limited Petawatt for efficient harmonic generation [Pirozhkov et al, Opt. Express (2017)]. I made 9 presentations on this research (international: 1 invited, 1 oral & 1 poster; domestic: 1 invited, 3 oral & 2 poster).
