Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The organization of genes in the genome changes during the course of evolution, but the arrangement of a small number (~ 3%) of genes is widely conserved among bilateral animals. It is known that this conserved gene organization (microsynteny) contains many developmental genes (genes expressed at the embryonic developmental stage). In the chordate ascidian, I comprehensively analyzed the genes that constitute microsynteny. In most cases, it was revealed that one of the genes constituting microsynteny was expressed at the embryonic development stage and the other was not expressed at the embryonic development stage. In addition, each genes in the microsynteny has promoters with different properties to prevent gene regulatory regions from interfering with each other.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究によって明らかになったマイクロシンテニーの性質は、ホヤのマイクロシンテニーに限らず一般的に遺伝子の並びにも共通する性質である可能性がある。つまり、遺伝子の発現制御領域が近傍の遺伝子の発現に影響を及ぼさないようにするための共通のメカニズムがあると考えられる。このような仕組みを解明することは、ゲノム進化における遺伝子の並びについての理解に寄与すると考えられる。
