Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The aim of the proposed research is orchestrating the cloud computing and the software defined networking (SDN) technologies for the future Internets of Things (IoTs).

In Fiscal Year 2014, the first year of the research project, the up-to-date research results have proved the feasibility of the orchestration. We furthermore research the efficiency and the suitability of the orchestration in the IoT context. Specifically, we investigate the state-of-the-art related technologies for the proposed IoT architecture, as well as, IoT devices. We have proposed an energy harvesting communication protocol for sensor networks, which are essential in the future IoT. Additionally, we have proposed the novel Wi-Fi system for the future use. Besides that, we have evaluated many aspects of the major SDN technology (i.e., OpenFlow) including routing capability, resiliency, etc. The results have been published in one journal and 6 conference papers.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The fast developments of the cloud computing and SDN technologies are beneficial for the research. It lets the orchestration system be implementable without significant efforts.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In Fiscal Year 2015, the second year of the research project, we are going to research the novel technologies, which support location-awareness (e.g., LISP), scalability, low latency. The new technologies will be easily and effectively evolved on the existing orchestration. Moreover, the SDN and cloud technologies will be improved to better support the IoT. The published results including novel algorithms and enhancements will appear in journals and conference proceedings.

Causes of Carryover

We have used the open source software for the first version of the prototype system. Therefore, the allocated money could be saved for the next fiscal year.

Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget

We plan to spend the carried-over money for the IoT and SDN devices in the next version of the scalable prototype system.
