Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
One major achievement was encapsulated in a paper entitled “Assessing the Recreational Value of World Heritage Site (WHS) Inscription: A Longitudinal Travel Cost Analysis of Mount Fuji Climbers,” a hybrid, revealed preference study that monitored recreational value of cultural heritage, combining panel data with field surveys collected from Fuji climbers over six seasons. Another paper was published in International Tourism Review together with the same co-authors (Drs. YANG & YAMAMOTO) provides retrospective, micro-level insights into consumer behaviour amongst Fuji’s diversifying segments. The expansion and internationalization of the adventure tourism sector requires monitoring of the satisfaction and behaviour of diversifying visitor segments. This research focuses on international climbers that descended from the summit of Mount Fuji in summer season. These findings have applications for segment-based monitoring research, and implications for targeted management strategies such as efforts to encourage more international climbers to stay in a hut.
