Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study aims to place Emily Dickinson in the milieu of an agricultural environment in Amherst, Massachusetts, where Edward Hitchcock promoted scientific agriculture emphasizing farming on scientific principles. In addition, Amherst residents, led notably by William Smith Clark, conducted campaigns to attract Massachusetts Agricultural College to Amherst. Viewing her in such an agricultural environment, this research shows that Emily Dickinson, who was considered to be less associated with society, was profoundly involved in the public sphere of agriculture.
