Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This year has been spent analyzing the data previously collected and bringing the project toward completion through the preparation of further works to be published. In addition to large scale student data collection concerning perceptions and parameters of teachers termed as native speakers, data has further been collected and collated from employment advertisements posted on the JREC-IN website. The use of the term native speaker, as a supposed qualification for employment, continues to be problematic within Japan and therefore requires further attention. Moreover, internal university discourse has been analyzed based on distinctions drawn between Japanese and English when prior assumptions are made about the target audience. I was invited to contribute a Foreword for a new book on native-speakerism (Towards Post-Native Speakerism: Dynamics and Shifts) within Japan and have made several other contributions to ongoing academic projects which are either under review or in preparation.
