Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This study aims to find ways to increase students’ capacity to speak through investigating their attitudes to various classroom situations. The study explores: (1) the classroom situations that can facilitate and inhibit speaking, and (2) students’ underlying reasons. A structural equation model will be created to illuminate the strength of variables that promote/inhibit speaking.
I analysed qualitative narrative frame data to understand the factors that influence students' capacity to speak. I discussed the data with co-researchers Anne Burns (in Brisbane) and Kazuyoshi Sato and his graduate students (in Nagoya). I discussed my results at the AILA Conference (in Brisbane) and JALT Conference (in Tsukuba). My co-authored paper (with Anne Burns) has been accepted for the ELT Journal.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Because my situation changed, preparing for this research took more time than I expected. Therefore, I started my research later than planned.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
During April to June, I plan to design the questionnaire based on the findings from the narrative frames study. I also plan to submit my narrative frames study to a regional journal for publication. I plan to visit Nagoya University of Foreign Studies to discuss the research with Professor Sato and his MA TESOL students. Based on advice from Professor Akamatsu, I plan to launch the pilot study in July for undergraduate freshmen. During August to September, I plan to analyse the pilot study and revise the questionnaire. I will go to the UK to research and attend the BAAL Conference. During October to December, I plan to disseminate the revised questionnaires to high schools using the alumni teacher networks of Doshisha, Nagoya University of Foreign Studies and Kansai University. I plan to conduct the statistical data analysis in January to March (2016).
|
Causes of Carryover |
In my original plan, I wanted to attend the TESOL Conference, but I could not go due to work commitments.
|
Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
I plan to go to the BAAL Conference in the UK using the 190,870 yen that remains from last year. Using this year's 600,000 yen budget, I plan to go to the TESOL Convention in the USA and domestic travel to Shizuoka (JALT Conference), and Nagoya (collaborative research with Prof. Sato). I plan to spend any remaining money on TESOL books.
