Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This study aims to find ways to increase students' capacity to speak through investigating their attitudes to various classroom situations. This study explores: (1) the classroom situations that can facilitate and inhibit speaking, and (2) students underlying reasons. A structural equation model will be created to illuminate the strength of variables that promote/inhibit speaking.
I have published two papers in international refereed journals (ELT Journal and AJAL) with my co-researchers Anne Burns and Takako Tanaka. I also published in the Osaka JALT Journal. I presented at the BAAL Conference in the UK in September 2015 and the JALT Conference in Shizuoka in November 2015.
I met with Nobuhiko Akamatsu and Takako Tanaka and we have designed the questionnaire and the system for communicating with high school teachers. After a pilot study with undergraduate students, the questionnaire should be ready for sharing with high schools.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Because my situation changed, preparing for this research took more time than I expected. Therefore, I started my research later than planned.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
During April, we will pilot the study with Doshisha University freshmen and begin contacting high schools. During May-June, we will disseminate the questionnaires and I will visit Nagoya University of Foreign Studies to meet teachers and Professor Sato. During the summer vacation, I will analyse the results with Professor Akamatsu at Doshisha University. I plan to present the results at the JALT Conference with Professors Burns, Akamatsu and Tanaka. I also plan to present at an international conference. In January, I plan to begin writing a paper based on the results for a refereed international journal.

Causes of Carryover |
In my original plan, I planned to go to the TESOL Convention in the USA, but I could not due to work commitments.
|
Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
With the 292,238 yen that remains, I plan to go to Nagoya for the JALT Conference and for collaborative research with Prof Sato at Nagoya University of Foreign Studies. I plan to spend any remaining money on electrical equipment and TESOL books.
