Outline of Final Research Achievements

This comparative research project examines the formation and changing Taiwanese Identity of ex-Taiwanese Japanese soldiers living in Japan and Indonesia. In Taiwan Studies, it is generally said the begging of the forming Taiwan Identity is 228 incident in 1940’s. But the result of this project demonstrates for the Taiwanese who lives in out of Taiwan it could be thought their forming self-identity as Taiwanese are more effected by the democratization of Taiwan since 1990’s. Taiwanese overseas has been marginalized between Overseas Japanese studies and Overseas Chinese studies and the blank of the previous research. This research has been one of arising the Taiwanese overseas studies and the beginning of re-writing the history of East Asia and South-East Asia in the eyes of the marginalized people after WW2.
