Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study investigated how to design the teaching letters & phonemic awareness in English to Japanese students in elementary school. First this study showed it is important for children to develop Phonemic Awareness before learning Phonics and it is also indispensable for teachers to observe children’s progress and miscues of reading and writing letters closely.
Moreover, this study designed the curriculum of teaching letters and developing phonemic awareness, and made a leaflet as a learning material. This leaflet contains the methods of developing Phonemic Awareness through children’s language environment, and every steps to recognise the structure of a word (focused on onset and rime). By using this leaflet, teachers can make their lessons easily and also they can observe and check children’s progress with their writing notes on this leaflet as a portfolio.
