Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The main aim of the proposal was to investigate using exciton-polariton condensates as a source of non-Gaussian light. Specifically, there were 3 sub-aims that were targeted: (I) Exploration of parameter space and optimization of model parameters (II) Simplification of the principle of the previous work (III) Finding applications of non-Gaussian light from polaritons.
This was originally planned as a two-year project, with aims (I) and (II) being completed in the first year, and aim (III) being completed in the second year. As of January 2015, I have now relocated to New York University's Shanghai campus in China, hence I terminated the project at the end of the first year. We have completed aims (I) and (II) and refined our scheme for producing non-Gaussian light. Aim (III) was not completed, and requires more work to complete that aspect of the project.
In our previous scheme, two lasers were necessary to generate the non-Gaussian light. One for creating the exciton-polaritons in the first place, and another to fix the phase to avoid phase diffusion -- this completely destroys the effect that we are trying to create. We were successful in reducing this to a single laser, which not only simplifies the experimental setup, but makes the generation process much more straightforward. However, a phase fixing mechanism is still necessary, which is accomplished by another means, by feeding back a homodyne current. We found that this gives much stronger non-Gaussian light than our previous scheme, improving the performance greatly.
