Outline of Annual Research Achievements

We have performed simulations of a 500MHz RF coaxial electron gun using various software packages (Magic, Superfish etc). A cavity for the electron gun was made to the required design by an external company. Other essential parts for operation of the gun were assembled. These include, 1. A 4kW pulsed 500MHz RF amplifier (based on a combination of 1kW amps previously available at AIST); 2. A coniferous carbon nano-structured (CCNS) based electron emitter (made in-house at AIST); 3. Vacuum components and pumps (mostly previously existing parts); 4. A fast MCP for electron detection (borrowed from within the research group). After the arrival of the cavity at the end of FY2014, the test system was constructed and is now under characterization.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

Production of the electron gun cavity by the company took longer than expected and was only delivered at the end of the FY2014. We had hoped to have begun initial test experiments before the end of FY2014 but these are only now starting. The project should still be completed as planned in FY2015

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In this FY2015 we plan to soon finish the characterization of the electron gun on the test bench and then transfer it to the superconducting accelerator. After characterization of the accelerated beam we plan to start positron production with the high-energy, short-pulse, high pulse rate source. This source is well suited for measuring lifetime of positrons created 'in-situ' via high-energy gammy rays (gamma induced positron) and we intend to begin measurements in large (>mm) samples.

Causes of Carryover

A small amount (572Yen) remained after purchase of all necessary items in FY2014 as it is difficult to balance the budget exactly to 0Yen.

Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget

This 572Yen will be used for consumables in FY2015
