Research Project

Project/Area Number 26800098
Research InstitutionThe University of Tokyo

Principal Investigator

SCHULZE ANDREAS  東京大学, カブリ数物連携宇宙研究機構, 特任研究員 (60721842)

Project Period (FY) 2014-04-01 – 2017-03-31
KeywordsAGN evolution / SMBH growth / AGN feedback
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

I made a major contribution to the paper by Bongiorno+16. In it, I determined, for the first time jointly the stellar mass function and the accretion rate distribution function of AGN and their host galaxies. This revealed evolution in the accretion rate distribution function, which shows a clear downsizing behavior. Our work provided evidence for AGN feedback as a plausible process for the quenching of star formation in massive galaxies.
I started the analysis of near-IR spectroscopic data from FMOS of type-2 AGN in the COSMOS field. I fitted their narrow-emission lines in individual spectra and also performed spectral stacking of the data set. The analysis is ongoing and a paper is in preparation, to be published in FY2016.
Together with our group around Masami Ouchi, myself and Shiro Mukae (a graduate student of Tokyo university) we successfully carried out 1 night of HSC imaging at the Subaru telescope over part of the HETDEX field. Shiro Mukae carried out the data reduction of our HSC data set, under Masami Ouchi’s and my supervision . Data reduction and basic analysis are finished and we are now providing the imaging data, essential for the to the HETDEX collaboration. We intend to apply for more HSC time in the next semester to continue our imaging survey.
I successfully applied for observing time at the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to study the fuelling mechanism of supermassive black holes. This project will answer a fundamental open question on the growth of black holes.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

I could make a major contribution to the paper by Bongiorno+16 on the demographics of the active black hole population and their host galaxies, based on the COSMOS sample. This work also provides important constraints on the role of AGN for the quenching of star formation.
I have analyzed the FMOS data of type-1 AGN in the COSMOS as outlined in the proposal. In addition, I added the analysis of the type-2 (obscured) AGN population for which near-IR spectroscopy with FMOS/Subaru has been carried out. Both projects are well advanced, but unfortunately a publication of the results could not been achieved in FY2015. I expect publication of these two projects in two separate papers in FY2016.
The start of the HETDEX survey has been delayed compared to the statement in the proposal, due to technical problems in the telescope upgrade. Commissioning is currently ongoing and the start of the survey is expected to happen soon after successful commissioning, within the next few months. I started initial work, developing an AGN classification pipeline. A major effort towards it is anticipated within FY2016.
Having said that, I initiated new projects and collaborations, related to my proposed research goals. For the work on HETDEX, I am leading an initiative to obtain HSC imaging for the HETDEX main field. We successfully obtained, reduced and analyzed a first major part of this HSC imaging and plan to obtain the full data set via Subaru Open Use time in the coming semesters.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

I will continue and finish the analysis on the FMOS AGN data set. My results will be presented in a paper dedicated to the type-1 AGN population, a separate paper on the type-2 AGN population and their narrow line properties and will contribute to a survey paper in preparation on the FMOS sample (Kartaltepe et al), expected to be published within FY2016.
I plan to apply for additional Subaru time to continue our very successful HSC imaging survey and achieve full HSC coverage of the HETDEX field, which is essential for the success of the HETDEX project.
The HETDEX survey will start during FY2016. Commissioning is currently ongoing and the start of the survey is expected soon after. The first year dataset is expected to be available in mid-2017. An important task for the next few month is to develop a fast, efficient and reliable AGN classification pipeline for the large spectroscopic data set provided by HETDEX. I will start to work on the initial HETDEX data, but it is not expected to lead to a publication already within FY2016.
I will also start work on the analysis of our new ALMA data, which will be obtained in FY2016.
I will finish the work on the LoBAL QSO data set, which will be presented in another publication, expected within FY2016.

Causes of Carryover

As a result of effectively proceeding with the original plan, I could save the grant.

Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget

For the further progression of the research initiated with the support of this grant, I will need to participate in the team meeting of the HETDEX project held May 10-13 at The University of Texas at Austin (Austin,TX, USA).
Furthermore, I plan to present the results obtained during the grant period at the international conference "Active Galactic Nuclei: what's in a name?" held in Garching (Germany), June 27 - July 1, 2016. I will combine this with a short stay at the MPE in Garching, Germany to discuss and work with HETDEX team members there for the advance of my research.
