Observational study of jet-formation regions in supermassive black holes with a novel VLBI technique

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究では巨大ブラックホール(BH)から噴出する相対論的ジェットについて、生成領域構造をシュバルツシルト半径(Rs)に匹敵する空間スケールで探査可能な「多周波相対VLBI」手法を活用し、「ジェットの絞り込みはBHからどの程度の距離で始まるのか?」、「ジェット生成にBHスピンは必要かどうか?」等について議論し、駆動機構について観測的検証を行う。
本科研費最終年度は、前年度からターゲットに追加した「狭輝線１型セイファート銀河（NLS1）」について、大変興味深い結果が得られた。多周波相対VLBI手法を用いて近傍のNLS1 1H0323+342のジェットの収束プロファイルを測定したところ、ジェットが数千から数十万Rsに渡ってパラボラ状に絞り込まれ、その後コニカル形状に変化して収束領域が終了することを発見した。また、得られた収束プロファイルに基づきジェット生成地点でのサイズを求めると、BHサイズの数10から数100倍大きいことがわかった。これはNLS1のジェット生成にとってスピンは必ずしも必要ではなく、降着円盤から駆動されている可能性を示唆している。本結果は平成27年度に調査したM87ジェット（BH駆動を示唆）とは対照的であり、巨大BHジェットの駆動機構や収束領域、スピンの必要性はジェットの規模や環境によって変化することを示唆するものとなった。
ジェット駆動多様性の観測的示唆が得られたのは今回が初めてであり、現在査読論文にまとめている段階である。論文投稿は本科研費期間終了後にずれこむものの、当初の研究計画は概ね達成されたと考えている。
最後になるが、研究代表者は日本天文学会において2016年度研究奨励賞を受賞した。本科研費に基づく研究内容が主要な受賞理由の１つになっており、支援を頂いた日本学術振興会に心から感謝を申し上げたい。
