Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In FY2014, we initiated the investigation of the incorporation of carbon dioxide into C-C unsaturated bonds for the synthesis of value-added chemicals. Various N-heterocyclic carbene supported Fe, Ni, Cu, and Zn complexes have been synthesized. These catalysts have been screened in the model reaction of diphenylacetylene with carbon dioxide. After analysis of the reaction mixtures of initial trials, we have identified the formation of the expected product. The structure of this product was also confirmed by characterization of the isolated pure compound. We are now working on the systematic screening of metal slats, ligands, solvents, additives, reaction temperature, and other reaction factors to improve the yield of the current reaction. The preparation and isolation of some reaction intermediates from stoichiometric reactions of metal complexes are also underway. We also got some preliminary results of the reaction of alkenes with carbon dioxide and started to optimize the reaction conditions of this transformation.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Following the proposed research plan, promising results have been obtained for the reactions of both alkynes and alkenes with carbon dioxide. The optimization of the reaction conditions and mechanistic studies are underway.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
After the screening of the reaction factors to increase the selectivity and efficiency of the reactions, the substrate scope will be investigated. The application of this method in the synthesis of complex molecules will also be studied. We will try to figure out the reaction mechanism based both on the isolation and characterization of reaction intermediates and on related DFT calculation. The asymmetric reaction of alkenes will be investigated by using chiral catalysts.
