Outline of Annual Research Achievements

In FY2015, study of water absorption was focused on the experiment of water distribution in cracked mortar. With different crack widths, and wetting and drying conditions, water contents in local areas beside crack were measured using an electric moisture meter. Gravity and air in the crack was found to influence local water distribution greatly, causing much higher water content at the deeper areas in crack. Those results are helpful to clarify water behavior in crack, and also provided useful data for evaluating durability in the future. Together with the result in FY2014, a paper was published in Proceedings of 4th International Symposium on Engineering, Energy and Environment. A presentation was fixed to be presented in Annual Meeting of Japan Society of Civil Engineers, September 2016.

Another experiment study, focusing on the inhibition of water penetration, was carried out. Specimens were made by mixing water repellent agents in mortar. It was found that those mortars had good water repellency, even if crack occurred. The reason was that water repellent agent greatly increased bulk water tightness of mortar. The bulk water repellency is an advantage for increasing durability of concrete, especially under cracked condition. Two papers concerning the above results were published in two proceedings, Proceedings of 4th International Symposium on Engineering, Energy and Environment, and Proceedings of 4th International Symposium on Advances in Civil and Environmental Engineering Practices for Sustainable Development.
