Outline of Final Research Achievements

To examine immunological mechanisms in autoantibody production in viral infection, we have utilized murine gamma-herpesvirus 68 (MHV68) infection to inbred mice. In this study, we found that MHV68 infection induced polyreactive B cell clones in germinal center B cells and plasmablasts/plasma cells in mice infected with MHV68. It should be noted that a transient autoantibody appeared to be originated from short-lived plasmablasts in spleen. In long-lived plasma cells, an increased proportion of virus-mono-specific clones were observed, indicating a novel tolerance checkpoint in the plasmablast compartment.
