Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research examined, through three experiments (hereafter, (i), (ii), and (iii)), how faces, voices, and their interactions affect empathy and reciprocal behavior. In (i), the aim was to investigate differences in the acceptance rate by the participants as respondents in the ultimatum game, according to their familiarity with the proposers’ surnames. In (ii), the aim was to examine whether a difference in pitch accent in accusatory statements changes the way participants perceive what the focus of the accusation is. In (iii), the aim was to investigate how the interaction of faces and voices influences the judgments of complex emotions in several social contexts. These studies brought about three important findings. First, (i) showed that the familiarity with surnames has no effect on reciprocal behaviors. Second, (ii) revealed that, vocal cues are important in judging the focus of accusation. Third, (iii) showed that vocal cues can occupy a dominant position over facial cues.
