Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
1. Double layer composite membranes consisting polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as support (gutter) layer and aromatic acid (benzoic, phthalic, mellitic etc.) incorporated titanium dioxide (TiO2) layer was developed in this project. 2. The developed membranes demonstrated unique gas separation performance for the carbon dioxide and nitrogen separation. Namely, The addition of the carboxylic acid into the titanium dioxide drastically improved the selectivity for the carbon dioxide. 3.The mechanism of separation was found to be related to the abundance of the carboxylic moieties originated from the incorporated acids. As verified by the computer modelling (density functional theory) carboxylic acid created the site with a strong affinity to carbon dioxide in contrast to nitrogen. This specific molecular interaction resulting in the preferential surface sorption and diffusion of the carbon dioxide through the selection metal oxide layer. 4. Gas separation performance of composite membrane built with phthalic acid in TiO2 as separating layer is comparable with trending materials for gas separation; polymers of intrinsic microporosity, thermally reversed polymers, mixed matrix membranes. Future efforts will be directed on the improvement of membrane mechanical properties in particular to avoid the defects formation in the composite layer.
