Research Abstract |
A new, fully implantable epidural pressure (EDP) sensor was designed for intracranial pressure montoring. This is a passive resonant circuit transducer of simple counter scale design. Telemetric measurement is done easily by a grid-dip of the external antenna coil (probe), applied on the intact scalp over the implanted EDP sensor. This EDP sensor has the following advantages: 1) There is no zero drift due to gas leak, because a leaf spring is used instead of a bellow. 2) EDP sensors of various sensitivities can be designed easily by using leaf springs with different spring constants. 3) The pressure disc and ferrite core do not tilt because of the leaf springs pair. 4) There is no complicated system for atmospheric correction because there is no vacuum space. 5) Pulse waves can be detected by sampling 50 times per second. 6) Thermal drift is negligible. 7) The method of measurement is very easy by applying the probe to the scalp, and the inconvenience to patients is very sligh. This EDP sensor is useful for monitoring intracranial pressure when dealing with patients with acute intracranial disease. Clinical experiences with using this EDP sensor have been also reported.
