Research Abstract |
The results of preliminary fundamental experiment on the excellent deoxidation ability of scandium for the molten molybdenum was applied to the semi-continuous arc melting process of the metal and its alloys, Mo-0.5% V and Mo-0.1 Nb % alloys. Results obtained are as follows: (1) The melting process of molybdeum with scandium by the non-consumable electrode semi-continuous arc melting furnace was established. (2) Molybdenum, Mo-0.5% V and Mo-0.1% Zr alloy ingots melted by this process with small amounts of scandium were warm-worked to thin sheets and/or wire with intermittent annealing. Good workability of the ingots was obtained by the scandium addition. (3) Then, the Mo-0.5% V alloy sheet was tested for tensile properties to obtain technical data as a non-heat treatmentable molybdenum alloy. (4) Meanwhile, the Mo-0.1% Zr alloy sheet and wire were internally nitrided, and subsequently they were tensile tested. A high strength superior to TZM was obtained in this alloy which was easy workable before the treatment. (5) Microscopic examination showed that the no voids were observred in the weldment of molybdenum alloys melted with scandium, while large voids were found in the weldment of P/M molybdenum, and that zironium is a grain refining element of molybdenum weldment.
