Research Abstract |
New two actuators using flat type and cylindrical linear pulse motors were proposed in this research. A portable artificial heart driver has been developed using a flat type linear pulse motor. This driver is designed for total artificial heart implantation , but it is also applicable to left-, right-, and bi-ventricular assisting artificial hearts. Two polyurethane cylinders are placed at both ends of a mover of the linear motor, which generate compressed air and vacuum alternately to make systole and diastole for left and right artificial hearts at the same time in alternate phase. In-vitro tests were performed using a Donovan type mock circulatory system with a pair of diaphragm type artificial hearts of 140 milliliters designed for implantation in a calf. The experiment using this portable artificial heart driver to a calf was carried out successfully. A total artificial heart driver has also developed using a cylindrical linear pulse motor. The principle of operation of this driver is same as above motor. The driver is completely noiseless in its driving and has good manupulation. The driver has a simple configuration and can control the thrust by changing the exciting current. The heart rate can be controlled from 90 to 156 beats per minute for stroke 25 millimeters with high accuracy.
