Research Abstract |
In order to perform long-term observations of solar full-disk velocity field and magnetic field, a new observing system has been developed. This system consists of (1) magneto-optical filter with Na vapor embedded in strong magnetic field (2500G), (2) optical data handling system which enables real time detection of resolved velocity fields of the sun using KDP, image processor and CCD detector, and (3) optical disk system which can record enormous amount of data so that solar seismology observation is achieved. In making the magneto-optical filter special techniques were developed to obtain stable Na cell in high temperature (300゜C) condition using special Schott glass and cermic cell. Completed cell has an active temperature control system and can be applied, for the first time, to very long observations of solar velocity fields necessary for the solar seismology study. Using this filter we succeeded in finding a new magneto-optical effect realized when elliptically-polarized lights enter. Two kinds of filters with the magnetic field vertical and parallel, respectively, to the optical axis have been developed. With the completed system along-term observation of solar velocity and magnetic fields are currently in progress.
