Research Abstract |
1. Growth rates and other aspects of polypal growth in the colonies of Galaxea fascicularis were studied. In addition, reproductive processes of this species, Porites (Synaraea) rus and Pocillopora damicornis were elucidated. 2. Newly settled polyps of Pocillopora damicornis were studied by transmittance and scanning electron microscope and the microstructure of both soft tissues and skeleton were analyzed with special reference to the initial stages of calcium carbonate crystallization. 3. Calcium carbonate crystallization processes of the regenerating skeletons of Acropora hebes were examined and elucidated to parallel the normal skeleton formation processes. In addition, calcium binding capacity of calcium binding substance obtained from alcyonacean and scleractinian corals was studied and positive results were obtained. 4. Processes of detachment of discs from stalks of Fungia fungites was studied with scanning electron microscope and found that crystal to powder transformation at the detaching site was found reponsible for detachment, which in turn was probably induced by acid production of calicoblastic epithelial tissues. Changes in mechanical strength in the course of detachment was studied also. 5. Fertilization, embryogenesis and metamorphosis of the larvae of Lobophytum crassum and Galaxea fascicularis were studied. 6. Transformation of nematocysts in the tentacles of Galaxea fascicularis during the course of changes from the normal to sweeper were studied. Nematocysts with slender capsules and long shafts of threads transformed into those with fat capsule and short and obsure shaft, which were proposed to be included in b-rhabdoid group.
