Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study was to make an animal model of sensorineural hearing loss by partial destruction of the inner ear. Argon laser was used for this particular purpose. The tympanic bulla of the guinea pig was exposed in order to irradiate laser beam into the cochlea. The cochlear wall and the round window membrane were the sites of irradiation. Power and duration of single irradiation were 1 w and 0.5 sec. Cochlear changes after irradiation to the cochlear bony wall were not uniform, because of thickness of the bony wall. However, irradiation through the round window membrane produced marked morphological changes in the cochlea: Vacuole formation in the stria vascularis, rupture or Reissner's membrane, fracture of the osseous spiral lamina, destruction of organ of Corti and destruction of the tectorial membrane. The method can be used not only to investigate correlation of morphology and function of the inner ear, but to develop a method of treatment of inner ear disease.
