Research Abstract |
Because of the recent advance in pneumatically driven artificial hearts and heart assist devices, suviving period of experimental animals extended significantly. Any of these pumps, however, are not totally implantable due to the bulky energy source and energy conversion system. An electrically powered and mechanically driven blood pump would be the only choice for long term application. Thus, we developed an electromagnetic energy conversion system to drive the artificial heart. Computer aided engineering ( CAE ) technique is required to design an electromagnetic driven blood pump which is small in size and light in weight. Then the CAE program has been developed using the results of minute analyses of a cardiovascular system, an electromagnet, an energy transfer mechanism and power supply. A plate type electromagnet was selected from many kinds of electromagnet and the magnetic driven blood pump was designed and fabricated. The pusher plate was connected to an armature of the electromagnet through a plate spring and toggle links to magnify the stroke of the armature and to store the machanical energy temporarily.
