Research Abstract |
We designed a controlled Japanese for technical documents. Controlled Japanese is a small subset of Japanese which makes technical documents well understandable and less ambiguous both in syntax and semantics. So, it is useful not only for technical documents but also for man-machine interface language and machine translation. Then, we made an experimental system to assist to make technical documents in Controlled Japanese. Achievement of our project is summarized as follows. (1) Causes which make technical documents unnecessarily complicated and ambiguous were analysed. (2) Functional expressions needed for technical documents were standardized. Then, Rules for transfering functional expressions to standardized ones were made. (3) Dependency structures sufficient for Controlled Japanese were discussed and Controlled Japanese grammar was designed. (4) There is strong correlation between complexity of dependency structure and length of a sentence. And multi-layered AND/OR expression is one of the main causes of syntactical ambiguity. Shortening rules to separate a long sentence into several short sentences and rules to dissolve complex AND/OR structure were derived through experiments. (5) Basic functions for writing assisting system were discussed and an experimental system with those functions was made. (6) Evaluations of Controlled Japanese and the writing assisting system is under way.
