| Research Abstract |
As the main purpose of this study it was planned to publish an edition of all extant hitherto unedited texts relative to Porphyry's "Isagoge". Though it came once next to the publication, it tuned out to be necessary to review the whole study, as some new manuscripts were discovered to be inconporated in it, which takes some time longer. Therefore as the outcome of the research supported by the Grant-in-aid for 1984-85, I present two papers, which I refered to in the application as the sub-purposes of my research; leaving the study on Porphyry to be published as the fruit of the research by the Grant-in-aid for 1987-89.
In one of the papers, a new view on the controversy on universals in the 11th and 12th century is presented, based on teh hither-to unedited texts relevant to the matter. The second paper, which is written at teh request of the editors of "Argumentation" to rearrange my already published papers on instantiae, a technique of argumentation peculiar to the 12th century, for non specialist readers. In the new paper, however, besides the rearrangement of my old views, some new ideas are included on the basis of studies on some un-edited instantia literature.
Both of these papers shed some light on 12th century logic, which has been so far left unstudied.
