Research Abstract |
Sm-Co and Pr-Co ribbons were produced by rapid quenching techniques. The samples were melted and quenched in Ar gas atmosphere in order to avoid oxidation. The continuous ribbons obtained were 20 to 50 <micro> m in thickness, 1 to 3mm in width and above 10m in length. These ribbons were flexible, and it was possible to wind around a rod 8mm in diameter. The coercivities of as-quenched Sm-Co ribbons for Sm content<16.7at%(the stoichiometric content of Sm <Co_5> ) were two times the value of those of sintered Sm-Co binary systems. The effect of Cu addition of the magnetic properties of Sm-Co ribbons was also investigated. An appreciable increase of the coercivities was obsereved by small amout of Cu addition. A maximum coercivity of about 10k0e was obtained for 17.3at% Pr-Co ribbons (approximately the stoichiometric content of Pe <Co_5> ), which was twice the value of sintered Pr <Co_5> magnets. Oxygen content of these ribbons was 300 500ppm (by weight), less than about 1/10 the content of sintered magnets. These 17.3at% Pr-Co ribbons were magnetically and chemically stable under atmospheric conditions for over a year.
