Research Abstract

Today, the necessity of informations as well as resources and materials is keenly felt for the human communities and societies over the world. The advancement of electronics to the optical frequency region is expected strongly because of its capability of wideband and high density information transfer. Optical communication has already been a practical stage to perform the high-speed data transmission. Scientists and engineers are now facing the next target in the field of optical electronics; that is "optical computing" using the distinguished technology of optical functions to data processing, memory, logic, etc., to construct the "optical computer". However, the concept of the optical computer itself as well as the architecture has not been clear until now.
The object of this co-operation research program is to explore the study principles of optical computing, and to establish the concept of optical computer under the close cooperation with academic experts and specialists in the fields of optical electronics, optical information processing and information science and technology in Japan.
This research project was approved for three academic years from April 1985 to March 1988. Thirty groups belonging to universitites, governmental institutions, and public research facilities have joined this project for the fruitful cooperation. During the research period, six meetings were held inside Japan. The technical reports of each meeting have been published, and were also contained in the annual records of this project published at the end of each year. We hope the further advancement of the research in the field of optical computing and computers, and its successful results in the future.
