Research Abstract |
1. Establishment of aging normal curve in the upper limit of audible frequency (ULAF): With 4,293 healthy ears within the age of 5 to 85 years, ULAF was individually measured and showed the standard curve. With both sexes from at the age of 5 up to the age of 85, ULAF has been gradually lowering down with the increase of age. In age group over 65, as their median of ULAF shifted to lower frequency, their variance of it became larger. The degree of deterioration seen in age group over 65 was larger in males than females. These two facts may be associated with differences between both sexes concerning the duration of noise exposure. 2. Regional difference in ULAF aging normal curve: Ears examined were divided into two groups, inhabitants at urban areas and those at farming and fishing regions. With the males in rural areas, the aging process of ULAF has been greater than with those in urban areas. 3. ULAF of workers exposed to industrial noise: ULAF in 365 ears of workers exposed to various noise distributed at slightly lower frequency compared with specified age groups. There were many cases in which ULAF after work showed lower than before work. It is considered that there is a possibility of the effect of the industrial noise on ULAF. 4. ULAF of inhabitants exposed to aircraft noise: The measuring ULAF has been continued at "K" area (81.7 and over dB WECPNL, October 1986) situated a few kilometers to the northwest of Osaka International Airport, just underneath the take-off course. With 979 ears of school children (5-12 years of age), their ULAF was statistically lowered except for 11-year-old boy. There was no regional difference in visual accommodation.
