Research Abstract

1. GEOLOGICAL LITERATURES PUBLISHED SO FAR ON THE SURUGA BAY WERE COLLECTED AND THEIR ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY HAS BEEN PUBLISHED
2. SEDIMENTOLOGICAL FEATURES, PARTICULARLY DUE TO SEDIMENT-GRAVITY FLOWS AND BOTTOM CURRENTS WERE ANALYZED BY USING DEEP-SEA CAMERAS AND SUBMERSIBLES ON BOTTOM SEDIMENTS OF THE SURUGA AND SAGAMT BAYS. FACTORS CONTROLLING DISPERSAL OF HEAVY MINERALS IN SURUGA BAY WERE ALSO ANALUZED
3. ANOMALOUSLY THICK CONGLOMERATIC DEPOSITS DEVELOPED ALONG THE IZU COLLISION ZONE IN THE SOUTH FOSSA MAGNA AREA WERE ANALYZED SEDIMENTOLOGICALLY. THAT IS, THE PLIOCENE AKEBONO CONGLOMERATES AND THE PLEISTOCENE KANBARA AND BESSHO CONGLOMERATES WERE SUDIED ON THEIR PRANSPORTATIONAL AND DEPOSITIONAL MECHANISMS AND ENVITONMENTS OF DEPOSITION. THE RESULTS SHOW THAT MOST OF THESE CONGLOMERATES WERE GRAVITY-FLOW SEDIMENTS DEPOSITED ON THE UPPER SLOPE ENVIRONMENTS SIMILAR TO THE MODERN SURUGA TROUGH
4. AROUND THE HIDAKA MOUNTAINS UPLIFTED BY THE EARLY MIOCENE COLLISION OROGENESIS, VERY THICK COARSE CLASTIC SEDIMENTS OF MIOCENE AGE EXPOSED. ANALYSES OF LITHOFACIES, CLAST COMPOSITION. AND FABRICS OF GRAVELS HAVE REVEALED THAT THESE SEDIMENTS WERE SUPPLIED FROM THE HIDAKA MOUNTAINS AND WERE TRANSPORTED BY GRAVITY FLOWS FROM N-NW TO S-SE ON THE WEST SIDE OD THE HIDAKA MOUNTAINS ANS FROM N TO S ON THE EAST SIDE
5. PLAN OF FUTURE STUDIES RELATED TO THIS PROJECT: REDULTS OF THIS RESEARCH PROJECT WILL BE COMPARED WITH SEDIMENTOLOGICAL FEATURES OF THE MIOCENE TO OUATERNARY SIWALIK FORMATION IN THE HIMALAYAN RANGE UNDER JOINT STUDIES WITH INDIAN SCTENTISTS.
