Research Abstract

With respect to volcanic ashes from Sakurajima Volcano, Japan, modal and chemical analyses, x-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, polarized microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and grain-size distribution measurement have been carried out.
The volcanic ashes can be grouped into major three on mass color appearance: black ashes, i. e., most common volcanic ashes; red ashes; red ahses characterized by desilication, the high-content of ferric iron oxide and the presence of cristobalite, calcium hydrosulfate and calsium sulfate; and white ashes characterized by aboudant grains of vesiculated volcanic glass. The presence of vesiculated volcanic glass grains and calcium hydrosulfate crystals in common volcanic ashes are significant in such a respect showing that volcanic ashes were subjected to the adiabatic expansion and some chemical reaction due to volcanic gases at the time of eruption.
The natural and social environments are affected by major two factors due to volcanic ashes and its accompanying volcanic gases; physical factor attributed to the substantial nature and grain size of volcanic ash-composing materials, and chemical factor to volcanic gases.
