Research Abstract |
Target of this study is to discuss if desiliconization process of pig iron by using of FeCl_2 is possible or not. Physical state of a reaction product of this process, SiCl_4, is vapor at hot metal temperature so that a less slag process is expected. The SiCl_4 as reaction product can be used as a raw material for semi-counductor or advanced materials. It is found that desiliconization by using of Cl_2 gas alone is impossible because of simultaneous chlorination of Fe and Si but possible when FeCl_2 powder is injected into molten iron. Reaction kinetics are observed when FeCl_<> powder filled in pocket of plunger made of graphite is dipped into molten iron containing a few percent of silicon and saturated by carbon. Results of observation are as follows: 1) Reaction equation can be expressed as first order equation to silicon content in molten iron. 2) The reaction rate is inverse proportion to mass of molten iron. 3) No influence of temperature on reaction rate is observed, because of cancellation of increase in rate of chemical reactin and decrease in its driving force.4 The best utility of FeCl_2 is injected continuously into molten iron. 5) Residual FeCl_<> after reaction can be used repeatedly.
