Research Abstract |
1. THE PLEROCERCOID FOUND FROM TWO SPECIES OF FISHES, JAPANESE SURF SMELT AND OLIVE RAINBOW SMELT, WAS TENTATIVELY IDENTIFIED AS DIPHYLLOBOTHRIUM DITREMUM (CREPLIN, 1825) BY HOTTA (1982). OUR MORPHOLOGICAL AND BIOLOGICAL STUDIES OF THE CESTODE FROM JAPANESE SURF SMELT DEMONSTRATED VARIOUS CHARACTERISTICS DIFFERENT FROM D. DITREMUM IN EVERY STAGES OF THE WORM. IT WOULD SEEM TO BE A LOGICAL CONCLUSION THAT D. SP. FOUND FROM JAPANESE SURF SMELT IS A MARINE SPECIES DISTINGUISHABLE FROM D. DITREMUM, A FRESH WATER SPECIES. 2. THE SO-CALLED BROAD TAPEWORM, WHICH HAD BEEN TREATED AS DIPHYLLOBOTHRIUM LATUM IN JAPAN SINCE 1889, WAS REVISED TAXONOMICALLY AND DESCRIBED AS A NEW SPECIES, DIPHYLLOBOTHRIUM NIHONKAIENSE SP. NOV., BEING DISTINGUISHED FROM THE ORIGINAL DIPHYLLOBOTHRIUM LATUM IN FINLAND. THE TAXONOMIC STATUS OF THE NEW SPECIES AMONG RELATED SPECIES OF THE GENUS DIPHYLLOBOTHRIUM IS DISCUSSED. 3. TRACE ELEMENTS IN DIPHYLLOBOTHRIIDS CESTODES WERE ANALYSED BY ATOMIC ABSORPTION SPECTROSCOPY. SIX ELEMENTS (Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Cd, Ca) WERE ASSAYED FROM DIFFERENT REGIONS OF TWO TAPEWORMS: SCOLEX, NECK, IMMATURE, MATURE AND GRAVID PROGLOTTIDS. WHOLE STROBILAE AT DIFFERENT STAGES OF MATURITY WERE ALSO EXAMINED. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TRACE ELEMENT CONTENT AND THE PHYSIOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE IS INVESTIGATED. THE CALCAREOUS CORPUSCLES WAS ALSO ANALYSED BY X-RAY MICROANALYSIS.
