Research Abstract |
We have found that potassium-independent paranitrophenylphosphatase and glucose 6 phosphatase activities were restricted to the endoplasmic reticulum of retinal glial Muller cells in the guinea pig retina. Utilizing these newly developed cytochemical method, it could be easier to identify Muller cells after experimental retinal diathermy or laser photocoagulation. Muller cells have revealed mainly three different pathological processes corresponding to strength of stimulation. These pathological changes were also observed under high voltage electron microscopy for obtaining three dimensional view. We have also examine the participation of Muller cells in the transitional areas of the retina such as optic nerve-retinal or cilio-retinal region. In both areas, it could be easily revealed that Muller cells play major role in the connection between adjustcent epithelial components. Consequently, this cytochemical method might be useful for examination of Muller cells not only pathologically but also embryologically, cytologically.
