Research Abstract |
The effect of polyelectrolytes on the transport of various sulfonated direct dyes, C.I.Direct Yellow 12, C.I.Direct Red 2 and C.I.Direct Blue 15 from aqueous solution into a cellulose membrane has been studied at 25゜C and 55゜C. The diffusion of the dye into the cellulose membrane was analysed on the basis of parallel transport mechanism of surface and pore diffusion as developed in our previous paper, J. Appl. Polym. Sci.,32,4185 (1986). The relation between the fractional attainment of equilibrium and the time, and concentration profiles of the dye in the membranes, revealed that the diffusion of the dyes in this system is controlled by surface diffusion rather than pore diffusion. The nature and concentration of the polyelectrolyte influenced the adsorption equilibrium and also the rate of diffusion of the dye into the cellulose membrane but had no effect on the diffusion coefficient of the dye. The diffusion coefficients of dye obtained in the presence of the polyelectrolyte agree well with those obtained in the presence of small inorganic electrolytes. The osmotic pressure due to the addition of the polyelectrolyte does not affect the diffusivity of the dye into the cellulose membrane.
