Research Abstract |
A COMMUNICATION-AID SYSTEM FOR SPEECH-HANDICAPPED PERSON IS DEVELOPED TO HAVE SPECIFIC STEREOTYPICAL CONVERSATIONS SMOOTHLY EMPLOYING SYNTHESIZED SPEECH. THE SYSTEM CAN BE USED FOR RESERVING TRAIN TICKETS BY TELEPHONE AND ORDERING FOOD DELIVERY, ETC. THE IDEA BEHIND THE SYSTEM IS THAT WE CAN FORSEE THE FLOW OF STEREOTYPICAL CONVERSATION BEFOREHAND. NATURALLY THE FLOW MAY INCLUDE BRANCHINGS DEPENDING ON THE SPEAKER'S DECISIONS MADE DURING CONVERSATIONS. IN THE INITIAL VERSION OF THE SYSTEM, THE FLOW CHART OF CONVERSATIONS WAS INPUTTED TO A PERSONAL COMPUTER SYSTEM WITH TEXT SPEECH SYNTHESIS FUNCTION. IN THE FLOW CHART WERE EMBEDDED RELEVANT SENTENSES TO BE UTTERED. THE USER HAS BUT TO INPUT PARAMETERS SUCH AS DATE, NAME, TRAIN NUMBER, ETC. THE SYSTEM WAS SUCCESSFULLY APPLIED TO THE CASE OF TRAIN TICKET RESERVATION BY TELEPHONE. DURING THE CONVERSATION THE USER HAS BUT TO SPECIFY THE NUMBER OF SENTENCES ON THE DISPLAY. IN THE SECOND VERSION OF THE SYSTEM, THE SYSTEM WAS ENDOWED WITH THE ABILITY OF LETTING NAIVE USERS INPUTTING FLOW CHARTS DIRECTLY SO THAT THE SYSTEM MAY BE ACCEPTABLE TO NAIVE USERS WITHOUT THE SYSTEM DESIGNER'S ASSISTANCE. IT WAS FOUND THAT NAIVE USERS CAN EASILY LEARN HOW TO INPUT FLOW CHARTS. AS AN ADVANCED VERSION OF THE SYSTEM, A KIND OF CONSULTATION SYSTEM WAS DEVELOPED WITH FLEXIBLE DIALOGUE CONTROL MODULE AS WELL AS DOMAIN SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE-BASE. IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE SYSTEM CAN RESPOND NATURALLY AND SMOOTHLY TO A WIDE RANGE OF SPEECH ACTS. THUS THIS KIND OF SYSTEM MAY SERVE AS AN INTELLIGENT SECRETARY OF HANDICAPPED USERS IF THE SYSTEM IS INFORMED OF USERS' PLAN AND GOAL OF CONVERSATIONS.
