Research Abstract |
Through this co-operative research, a wide variety of researchers have been investigating unsolved problems of how to construct an evvective parallel computer system. From academic or experimental angles, we studied fundamentally some software problems on a parallel computer system. We focused our research activities on such academic problems as parallel algorithms, parallel programming languages, synchronization problems, data structures or control mechanisms, and implemented some parallel systems on the experimental paralled computers which had been developed by ourselves. By this theoretical and experimental research activity, we met with rich and good results as follows. 1. Results on system organizations of parallel computers: proposals or developments of a multiple-instruction stream and single data stream reduction machine,a parallel Prolog machine, a parallel control-flow computer, a low-level parallel processor, a brain-structured computer, a binary-tree database machine, a sin

gle-instruction stream and multiple instruction pipelining mechanism, a parallel inference machine, a parallel processor for three-dimensional color graphics, and a variable structured parallel machine. 2. Results on parallel programming languages: an implementation of a parallel Lisp system, a proposal of an interactive iconic programming facility, developments of a parallel function/logic programming system, and a proposal of a monitoring system for Ada tasking programs. 3. Results on parallel algorithms: an evaluation of deterministic scheduling algorithms, an evaluation of job loading policies for multiprogramming systems, a proposal of a distributed unification algorithm, a proposal of a transformational approach to systolic algorithms, an analysis of message complexities of distributed algorithms, an implementation of a distributed algorithm simulater, and a proposal of a part oriented parallel algorithm. 4. Results on operating systems for parallel computers: a development of an operating system for multiprogramming environments, an implementation of file access improvements in distributed systems, and a proposal of a holonic processing system.
