Research Abstract |
biological membrane is comprised of various kinds of proteins and lipids. However, its structure appears simple, in which lipid bilayer forms the matrix and membrane proteins are embedded in it. The purpose of this project is to investigate the mechanism of the higher order structure of biological membranes from five points of view: (1) Static structure of membrane and lipid bilayer, (2) dynamic structure of membrane, (3) Intramembrane interaction associated with ordered structures, (4) relationship between the structure and the function of membrane proteins, and (5) new techniques studying biological membranes. The results of studies revealed that ordered structures are formed by the balance of electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonds and hydeophobic interaction and that each interaction plays different role in the ordering phenomena of membrane.
