Research Abstract |
Effects of metals on the immune system of snimals were investigated in vivo and in vitro, and the results were applied to the evaluation of metal toxicity in metal-exposed humans. 1) The Protective efficacy of rabbit anti-JE virus immune serum in ICR mice was decreased by exposure of inorganic mercury or lead, but not by organic mercuryor cadmium. 2) The toxicity of lead on immune response of mice was decreased when the animals were acclimatizad to a low temperature environment. 3) Antinuclear antibody was found to be induced in mice exposed to cadmium as wellas in spleen cell cultures treated with cadmium. Moreover, equimolar doses of mercury and lead, but not iron (II), to mice caused an apparent induction of antinuclear antibody. 4) A low level of methylmercury, inorganic mercury and silver showed an apparent in vitro inhibition of active oxygen release from leukocytes. 5) Organotins induced remarkable thymus atrophy of mice. The compounds also showed an inhibition of active oxygen release and chemotaxis of leukocytes, inflmmation induced stimulants, and histamine release from mast cells. The common mechanism of the inhibition was estimated to be the absence of arachidonate release from cell membrane. 6) The immunological tests on beryllium workers showed that all workers positively reacted to both Be patch test and LST tests, but only half of them positively reacted to MIT tests. 7)Zirconium was shown to have an adjuvant like activity in relation to the humoral immune response.
