| Research Abstract |
As the original term of the project was shortened one year, and Zenkoji temple at Usu began a research of their documents themselves, the project changed a little. By giving up the whole Zenkoji documents to future studies, more attention was paid to the remaining two temples, Kokutai-ji at Akkeshi and Toji-in at Samani. The research covers the entire documents kept at the two temples, of which Toju-in group suffergd a severe loss as had been feared. The most notable achievement is that the relationship between Ainu and Buddhist temples became clear, e.g. the temples accepted the people of Ainu as their donors. Another significant discovery is their relationship with the Japanese including non-resident workers from other parts of Japan. Last to have been built in the Pre-modern period, these temples served as a morale support for the workers of the lowest class.
There is no room for doubt these documents also are first-rate historical materials for the study of the Pre-modern Period. Their quantity is so enormous that this term was devoted mostly to their sorting. The next step will be to reproduce the text of the whole documents in print.
The results of the present investigation is now accumulated in floppy disks, which will be made available to other researchers.
