Research Abstract

It is the purpose of this investigation to establish the cultural operations for secondary beech forest. We investigated the competition between trees and the stand structure of secondary beech forest. We established one parmanent experimental beech stand (1.2ha) in our University Forest. The results may be summarized as follows:
(1) The height increment of beech trees which are held over after the final cutting increases rapidly after that.
(2) The height increment of shrubs exceeds generally that of beech trees in the early stage, but the beech trees get soon ahead of the shruds in height. However some shrubs which grow in groups inhibit the growth of beech trees.
(3) A kind of mapletree (Acer japonicum) grows slower than young beech tree, even if it is held over after the final cutting.
(4) Beech trees are suppressed by shrubs temporary after the re-generation, and then the competition with subordinate trees begins. After that the competition with other high trees including beech follows.
(5) The area of crown cover of beech tree increases with basal area. The variation of area of crown cover is very large in the virgin beech forest.
(6) The seeding surface of beech crown is enlarged by preparatory or seed cutting.
(7) We can use the basal area as substitute for volume by drawing the yield-density diagram. To the yield-density diagram which is drawn by the accumulating the basal area in order the formula of reciprocal fits mostly.
